Electric Dental Handpiece Motors
The development of the dental handpiece was one of the most significant innovations in dentistry. As a necessary medical dental tool, it is continuous upgrading. Today, the electric dental handpiece driven by gear motors is chosen by many dentists.
A dental handpiece, also known as a dental drill, is a mechanical instrument used for removing decay, polishing fillings, performing cosmetic dentistry, and altering prostheses. There are two types of handpiece classified by different driving methods: the air turbine dental handpiece, and the electric dental handpiece. Powered by gear motors, the electric dental handpiece is chosen by many dentists for the advantage of consistent torque.
Constant torque and speed
Torque is the key factor when comparing different dental handpieces. The electric dental handpiece offers constant torque that does not vary as materials and head sizes, eliminating the stalling and ensure less vibration. Speed is another important factor. Although slower than the air turbine dental handpiece, the electric dental handpiece can maintain its output speed without speed loss that happened on the occasion of using the air turbine dental handpiece, even when cutting through crowns or other dense materials. Due to the absence of air, the electric dental handpiece is quieter and prevents the risks of some medical accidents such as air embolism.
How does it work?
Inside the electric dental handpiece, there is the gear motor drive system to make it rotate stably. The bur is connected through gears in the head of the handpiece to a central drive shaft that is physically turned by the motor. The gears of the electric dental handpiece hold the bur in a locked position to prevent the wobble or vibration of the bur that is often experienced when using an air-driven handpiece. Constant torque and stabilization of the bur allow a concentric motion that ultimately produces an even margin and demonstrates smooth cutting without bogging down.
Brushless DC gear motor
Among the various gear motor drive system, the brushless DC gear motor is an ideal choice for the electric dental handpiece. Without the brush in the gear motor, the brushless DC motor is shorter and lighter, which makes it easier to use. Also, it can reduce the wear on the bearings, resulting in less failure over time. The speed controller attached to the gearbox not only enables the electric dental handpiece switching between high-speed mode and low-speed mode, but also provides precise control of the rotation of the bur for a specific procedure. In addition, The brushless DC gear motor by ZHAOWEI achieves a noise lower than 45dB.
